Pants Fitting

Learn how to fit a straight-legged trouser pattern in this three-session class.
  • Pre-requisite: You have completed several garments on your own, ideally including a pair of pants. There will not be time to help with basic garment construction.
  • Project: This is a fitting class, and you will leave with a pants pattern customized to fit you, not a completed pair of pants.
  • Materials: Tools will be available for your use in the workspace. You will also need:
    • An approved pants pattern (see our suggestions below)
    • 3 yards 50" wide muslin
    • 2-3 yards 5/8" wide velcro
    • 1 yard lightweight woven fusible interfacing (Pellon SF101)
    • Swedish Tracing Paper
    • dark colored machine sewing thread
    • universal sewing machine needles, size 80/12
  • Prep-work: Wear tights or bike shorts to class for comfort and modesty during fitting. This class may require some at-home sewing in between sessions.
  • Skills Learned: This class focuses on the "Top Down, Center Out" method of pants fitting. You will learn those techniques, how to assess fit using a muslin, and how to transfer changes to your paper pattern.

The pattern is not included in this class, and is your choice, as long as it is approved by the instructors. Patterns must have a waistband (no elastic waist pants), cannot have a yoke, and cannot be close-fitting through the leg. We recommended choosing from these patterns:
  • Jenny (Closet Core)
  • Eve (Merchant & Mills)
  • Lander (True/Bias)
  • Hollywood (Liesl & Co.)
Contact the shop to be sure your pattern will work for this course if you do not choose from the list above!

The fitting process will require you to try on a one-leg muslin in class. Please wear bike shorts or tights to class for modesty during this process.

This class is Level III. See information about our class levels here.

Classes are for adults 18+.
