Tools & Techniques :: Hemming Basics



Learn the basics of hemming garments by hand and by machine.
  • Pre-requisite: You have completed our Beginner Series, or have equivalent sewing experience.
  • Materials needed: All materials are included.
  • Project: You will complete samples of several common hem types (see below). 
  • Skills learned: How to properly measure and mark for pant and skirt hems; cutting, marking, machine sewing, and pressing techniques to get the best results on several different types of hems. 

In this one part class, you will make a samples of these commonly used hems:

- a double fold hem with a machine topstitch
- a single fold hem with a hand sewn blind stitch 
- a hem finished with bias tape
- a curved hem with a narrow machine stitched 1/4" hem
- a hand rolled hem
- a hem for stretch knits using a double needle


This class is Level I. See information about our class levels here.

Classes are for adults 18+.  We offer individual lessons for those younger.

Cancellation Policy : Any cancellations or changes to your registration must be done at least 72 hours prior to the class start date in order to be issued a class credit. Cancellations that are made less than 72 hours before the class start date and students who do not show up to class will forfeit their registration payment. By continuing with class registration, you acknowledge and agree to these terms.
